Introduction
Jaffna is not a city you can “do” in a few hours. It moves at a different pace. The sun is hotter, the food is spicier, and the history is deeper. If you are planning a trip in 2026, you might be wondering how to fit the islands, the temples, and the food into a short weekend.
Don’t worry. We have designed the perfect Jaffna itinerary 3 days plan that balances the “Must-See” sights with the “Must-Eat” experiences. This route minimizes travel time and maximizes culture. Pack your sunglasses and let’s go.
Day 1: The Heritage Loop (Town & Fort)
Theme: Colonial History & City Vibes
09:00 AM | Breakfast at Malayan Café Start your trip at the legendary Malayan Café in the Grand Bazaar. Order a pair of Ulundu Vade and a steaming “Milk Coffee.”
- Photo Op: The vintage marble tables and the busy waiters pouring tea from a height.
10:30 AM | Jaffna Public Library Walk off the breakfast by visiting the iconic white domes of the Public Library. It is a symbol of resilience.
- Note: You can usually enter the public wing (shoes off). Silence is mandatory.
11:30 AM | The Jaffna Fort Just a short walk from the library is the star-shaped Dutch Fort. Walk the ramparts. The view of the lagoon on one side and the city on the other is the best introduction to Jaffna’s geography.
01:00 PM | Lunch: The Famous Crab Curry Head to Cosy Restaurant or Green Grass Hotel for lunch. Do not be shy—order the Jaffna Crab Curry. It’s spicy, messy, and absolutely worth it.
04:30 PM | Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil After a nap (you’ll need it after that lunch), head to Nallur.
- Why 4:30 PM? You will catch the evening Puja (ceremony). The atmosphere changes from quiet to electric as the drums start.
- Code: Men, remember to take your shirts off.
07:00 PM | Rio Ice Cream End Day 1 with a sugar rush. A “Rio Special” sundae is the traditional way to wash down the spicy food of the North.
Day 2: The Island Adventure (Delft & Nainativu)
Theme: Adventure & Wild Horses
06:30 AM | Departure to Kurikadduwan (KKD) You need to leave Jaffna town early. It takes about 45-60 minutes to drive to the KKD Jetty (via the scenic causeways).
- Transport: Rent a scooter or hire a Tuk-tuk for the day.
08:00 AM | Ferry to Delft Island (Neduntheevu) Take the Navy-run ferry to Delft.
- The Island: Once you land, hire a local modified truck/tuk-tuk to see the Wild Horses, the Baobab Tree, and the Coral Walls. It feels like a different planet.
12:00 PM | Return Ferry & Nainativu Take the ferry back to KKD, then hop on the smaller wooden boat to Nainativu.
- Visit: The Nagapooshani Amman Kovil (Hindu) and the Nagadeepa Vihara (Buddhist). Seeing these two major shrines side-by-side on a tiny island is a powerful symbol of coexistence.
03:00 PM | Late Lunch at Ammachi Unavagam On your drive back to Jaffna, stop at the “Ammachi” food court (run by the Department of Agriculture) near the jetty or in town. It serves authentic, healthy vegetarian food like Pittul and Modagam.
06:00 PM | Sunset at Pannai Causeway Stop on the long bridge connecting the islands to the mainland. Watch the sun set over the lagoon as fishermen check their prawn traps.

Day 3: The Northern Coast (KKS & Point Pedro)
Theme: Holy Springs & The End of the Road
08:30 AM | Keerimalai Naguleswaram Drive north to the coast. Visit the historic temple and the fresh water springs that sit right next to the ocean.
10:00 AM | Dambakola Patuna Drive west along the coast to see the white stupa where the sacred Bo Sapling first arrived in Sri Lanka. The manicured gardens and blue ocean backdrop are stunning.
12:30 PM | Lunch at Thinnai Organic For a farm-to-table experience, try the Thinnai Organic farm restaurant (or their main hotel in town). It’s a modern twist on Jaffna cuisine.
03:00 PM | Point Pedro (Sakkotai Cape) Drive to the northernmost tip of Sri Lanka. Take a photo with the flag monument. You are now closer to India than to Colombo.
05:00 PM | Souvenir Shopping Before you leave, stop at the Jaffna Market.
- Buy: Palmyrah Jaggery (in the woven baskets) and a packet of Roasted Curry Powder to take home.
